Pappo napolitano, formidable guitarrista del Blues, cuya carrera comenzón con Los gatos a fines de los 60 y no paró hasta su lamentable muerte en un accidente con su moto (su otra pasión aparte de la guitarra). Sus primeros albumes están basados en la formación de tríos en la linea de rock pesado y el blues. Su estilo propio lo hizo compartir escenario con monstruos de la guitarra como Chuck Berry con quien toco en varias ocasiones. Aca van sus 7 discos con el nombre de Pappo's Blues a titulo de homenaje a esta gran persona.
Pappo Napolitano, premium rock guitar man, who used to play with the mithic band Los Gatos at ends of the 60's, iniciated a non stop career since then, that woul last until his unfortunate death in a motorcycle accident (one of his strongest hobbies) some little time ago.His first albums are based in a tryo formation mainly of hard rock, some wonderfull blues and lots of guitar solos. His way of playing this instrument made him share the stage with great guitarist all over the world making a good friendship with Chuck Berry with whom he played in several ocasions.I 'll post his first works here as my humble tribute to this great man.

Some years ago, what began as a group of friends playing music evolved in this Band formed by musicians with former experience in other bands as Sygma, Spirit, Pablo el Enterrador, Otoñal, Irreal, etc. Their style is based in a symphonic rock with influences of Pink Floyd, Yes, Supertramp, Queen and Génesis making a song oriented music.For those who enjoy Pablo el Enterrador, surely will enjoy this one too.

Algunos años atrás, lo que comenzó como un grupo de amigos haciendo música evolucionó en esta banda formada por músicos de otras bandas de trayectoria propia como Sygma, Spirit, Pablo el Enterrador, Otoñal, Irreal, etc. Su estilo está basado en un rock sinfónico con influencias de Pink Floyd, Yes, Supertramp, Queen y Génesis orientados hacia la canción. Para aquellos que gusten de Pablo el Enterrador seguramente disfrutarán este disco.

After the dissolution of "Pescado Rabioso" (meaning "Raged Fish") the hard psycho prog band that Spinetta leaded after the historical "Almendra", Spinetta created Invisible jointly with Pomo (drums) and Macchi (bass) who came from the support band of Pappo Napolitano (Pappo's Blues).This first album is the heavier of the 3 edited by Invisible, and to my taste one of the best albums of that initial years for the prog movement in Argentina. The original LP came jointly with a single record with the bonuses tracks 7 & 8 of this CD. The tracks 9 & 10 are from a single editet before the LP and tracks 11 & 12 are from a single editer after the LP. This last represents the end of the "first era" of Invisible.

Luego de la disolución de Pescado Rabioso, la banda de hard psico progresiva que Spinetta lideró luego de disolverse Almendra, Spinetta formó Invisible junto a Pomo (batería) y Macchi (bajo) que venían de tocar con Pappo. Este primer album es el mas pesado del trío editado por Invisible, y a mi gusto uno de los mejores de esos primeros años del movimiento progresivo en Argentina. El LP original venía junto con un simple que son los temas 7 y 8 de este CD. Los temas 9 y 10 son de un simple editado antes que el LP y los temas 11 y 12 son de un simple editado después que este LP. Este último representa el final de la "primer etapa" de Invisible.

Arco Iris was formed in the early 70's as a band which incorporated folckloric melodies to their fusion basis style. Agitor Lucens V is a concept album talking about UFO's in a mistical way, this because of the influence of their spiritual guide DANA, who formed part of the band though she played no instruments. For me their best album by far. A masterpiece to be considered.
Arco Iris se participó del movimiento progresivo desde principios de los 70 incorporando melodías folclóricas a su base de rock fusionado. Agitor Lucens V es un album conceptual que toma a os OVNIS desde el punto de vista místico, esto tal vez influenciado por su guía espiritual DANA, que formaba parte del grupo sin ser ejecutante de ningún instrumento. para mí este es su mejor album. Un real joyita a ser tenida en cuenta.

Special appearance of Mel Colins and Pete Sinfield, featuring few songs from Sinfield solo material and KC's "Cadence and Cascade" among PFM's own songs, during the concert given by PFM in Iatly in 1973. Vocals on Sinfiled make this double CD bootleg an historical document. Though the quality sound is not so good, it's better than some bootlegs I've listened.

Con la aparición especial de Mel Collins y Pete Sinfield, interpretando temas del album solista de Sinfield y "Cadence and Cascade" de Crimson entre los temas propios de PFM en un concierto dado por PFM en Italia en 1973. La voz de Sinfield hace que este bootleg doble sea un documento histórico. Si bien la calidad de sonido no es muy buena, es mejor que muchos bootlegs que he escuchado.

The whole evolution of this great band along its history between 1971 and 1978, taken in differnte on stage performances. From their very first begginings playinc covers of King Crimson, going through their golden years finishing with live performances including Bernardo Lanzetti in vocals. An exceptional historical document for those nostalgic as myself.

My next few posts will focus on Prog, etc. records that may have been around for a while. At the moment I can no longer scour all the blogs looking for duplicates. So I'm gonna post what I feel like posting - if you beat me to it, my sincerest apologies. It will not be on purpose. I'm not really much of a Vangelis fan - most of his stuff is too New Agey for my personal tastes. But this one is a real winner. Recorded about the time he was buddying around with Jon Anderson of Yes, this record is simply put - fantastic. Symphonic in every sense of the word. Very programmatic, the music evokes vivid images of both heaven and hell and plays as a soundtrack from one through the other. Powerful, exciting music from a guy who unfortunately began to mellow with time. An absolute must.

Open Fire was guitarist Ronnie Montrose' 1978 creative collaboration with producer Edgar Winter, who also contributed numerous keyboard tracks. Recall it was Montrose adding fiery guitar work to the Edgar Winter Group's classic "They Only Come Out At Night" album ("Frankenstein", "Free Ride"), and this time Winter returns the favor on Montrose' first solo album following the dismantling of the Montrose band. Open Fire really opened up Montrose' guitar playing as he let his six string do the talking on tracks such as "Leo Rising" and the blazing title track. Classic hard rock with touches of symphonic. Great album.

I think this record will turn-out to be a nice surprise for Yes fans. Composed of two Yes members - Tony Kaye and Alan White - a semi-member/associate, Billy Sherwood on bass, and finally Jimmy Haun on vocals and guitar, who evidently played on the Union tour, but I have my doubts. What the hell did he play? They had two of everything, Jon Anderson being the exception, Anyway, I digress. I didn't really expect much out of this record initially, 'cos the Sherwood/Squire collaboration was pretty lame, and during the short time that Sherwood was in Yes, they seemed to be treading water. Turns out this record is very rewarding - lot of nice thick organs from Kaye's initial turn in Yes, classic pounding rhythm section, and Haun's amazing Howe-like guitar work. The vocals are very pleasing, combining Yes-like melodies and harmonies, although Haun really has more of a Phil Collins-like voice. Makes for an interesting sound. Songs are good, nice production, ocassionally a little slick, but for the most part, a very enjoyable listening experience. I wouldn't call this record a classic, but it is a very good representation of Classic Yes, which is a sound many of us hold so dear. Recommended.

For a Genesis bootleg, this is one of the best available from the Peter Gabriel era. The tape comes from the soundboard and sound quality is very good. The date printed on the cover is obviously wrong, since this is taken from a show from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour, which started in November 1974 and ended in May 1975. The Wembley show happened on April 15, 1975. The track list is also full of errors. Apart from the fact that track two should read "Back in N.Y.C." and track four "The Carpet Crawlers," more importantly track three is not "The Chamber of 32 Doors" but contains instead "Hairless Heart" and "Counting Out Time." Track six is a suite containing "Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats" and the introduction to "The Colony of Slippermen," which segues artificially (since it was never performed that way) into "Ravine," followed by "The Light Dies Down on Broadway" and "Riding the Scree." About half of the show is presented on this CD. Highlights include a demented ending to "Counting Out Time," a moving version of "The Carpet Crawlers," and an excellent "Evil Jam" (which is the atonal free-form jam credited on the album as "The Waiting Room"). The band is in very good shape (even though Tony Banks plays a couple of wrong notes) and the mix puts Steve Hackett's guitar more to the front — it was buried on the studio album. For the fan, this bootleg is a must.

The italian band Malibran was born in 1987, in Catania - Sicilia. At the beginning they had a different drumer and a solo vocalist (metal-styled) that were replaced later. In July 1989 a Prog Festival was held in Rome with 4 bands participating: Malibran, Leviathan, Edith and Notturno Concertante. After this show their first album The woods of Tales appeared in 1990. After this debut, the band received good critics for their 70's oriented style and their compositions. So here you have it to judge it by yourselves.

La banda Italiana Malibran nació en 1987 en Catania, Sicilia. Al principio su formación tenía otro baterista y un cantante de formación Metal reemplazados al poco tiempo. En Julio de 1989 un Festival progresivo fue llevado a cabo en Roma con 4 bandas participantes: Malibran, Leviathan, Edith y Notturno Concertante. Después de este show su primer album The Wood of Tales salió a la venta en 1990. Luego de este debut, Malibran recibió buenas crítics a su estilo setentista y a sus composiciones. Así que aquí está para que lo juzguen por ustedes mismos.

Espero que lo disfruten como yo! Como nuestras subidas son menores que al principio por una gran falta de tiempo, empezaré a subir discos en Flac cuando sea posible, y por el tamaño de los archivos usaré MU o tal vez RS. If you've heard their first albums (one studio and one live from the 70's), you will perhaps notice the difference of the years passed but the escence still remains.

Tercer y último album de la banda, que ha sido mi primer contacto con ellos. Un trabajo muy elaborado en un estilo sinfónico melódico en un album de música calma, con hermosas melodías y arreglos. Si escucharon sus primeros trabajos (uno de estudio y uno en vivo de los 70), notarán la diferencia de los años que han pasado, pero la escencia se mantiene.

The names on the cover-Miroslav Vitous, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Jack DeJohnette-smell like supergroup, but the record doesn't sound like the ego jam supergroups descend into. Beautifully played, with an almost fractal intricacy, yet spacious rather than cluttered, and still spontaneous sounding this is a fusion-jazz album of extreme high quality as the musicians that plays in it.

Los nombres en la tapa - Miroslav Vitous, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Jack DeJohnette- huele como un supergrupo, pero el disco no suea como una zapada de virtuosos mostrando su ego a la que pudieran caer. Hermosamente ejecutado, con cortes intrincados, mas bien espaciado ante apelmazado, y aún con un sonido espontáneo este en un album de jazz fusión de extraordinaria calidad com los músicos que tocan en él.

Tras la salida de Gustavo Santaolalla (guitarra y voz)quien fuera principal líder de la banda, Ara Tokatlian (vientos) toma el lugar dejado por Gustavo y orienta la musica del marcado estilo folclórico que siempre tuvo hacia un sonido fusión que mantiene las raíces autóctonas. Este album es el punto de inflexión a partir del cual Arco Iris comenzó a definirse en un sonido jazz fusión, habiendo perdido de aquí en adelante el toque folclórico que caracterizó a esta banda. Excelente album. Muy recomendable.

After the departure of Gustavo Santaolalla (guitars and voice) who was the main lider of the band, Ara Tokatlian (winds) takes the place left by Gustavo and changes the direction of the music to a marked fusion style still mantaining the original roots. This album is the inflection point from where Arco Iris defined its style in a jazz fusion sound abandoning the folkloric touch that was the band's lable . Excellent album. Highly recommended.

Nuova Era hace una música con grandes arreglos orillando lo sinfónico encontrándose influencias de las principales bandas italianas de la época. Un album que va de menor a mayor a medida que transcurren los minutos. Para disfrutar.

Band from Firenze, if though from the 90's, has all the ingredients of the italian prog of the 70's. Nuova Era makes a music with great arrangements stepping symphonic hints, where big influences of the main stream italian bands is found. An album that goes from beneath to a high level as minutes pass. really to enjoy.

This album compilates the first record of Almendra and all the singles of their first era. Almendra, one of the pioneers band of the borning rock in Argentina, formed the group of those bands (jointly with Vox Dei, Manal, Los Gatos, La Pesada, etc) that changed the direction of the rock style to a more psychodelic and hard vein. A song based album sharing melodic songs with blues, hard rock, psychodelia in a very self-made style. After the dissolution, main stream rock bands came out from its members: Pescado Rabioso (L.A.Spinetta), Color Humano (E.Molinari) and Aquelarre (E.DelGuercio & R.García). A nice piece of history of my native rock.

Album compilación que incluye el primer trabajo de la banda y los primeros singles editados. Almendra, una de las bandas pioneras del rock naciente de argentina, formo el grupo de bandas (junto a Vox Dei, Manal, Los Gatos, La Pesada, etc.) que dieron un vuelco al rock nacional hacia la psicodelia y el rock pesado. Un album donde conviven las canciones melódicas con el hard el blues y la psicodelia. Luego de su separación, surgieron de sus miembros 3 de las principales bandas de rock de los 70: Pescado Rabioso (L.A.Spinetta), Color Humano (E.Molinari) y Aquelarre (E.DelGuercio y R.García). Un buen documento histórico de mi rock nativo.

Rael begins in 1985 but is not until 1992 that they record they first and only album, reissued by Musea in 1997, where they gained a more international knowledge. Like others in Argentina, Rael has not been very well known in his own era. Playing a neo prog Genesis first years like - vocals included - Rael incorporates folckloric rythms to their music giving a very personal touch to their songs. Arrangements very well performed and a neat performance makes this a very good record unavailable these days. To take in account.

Rael se forma en 1985, pero no es hasta 1992 que graban su primer y único disco, reeditado por Musea en 1997 donde adquieren un mayor reconocimiento internacional. Como otros en Argentina, Rael no fué muy reconocido en su época. Ejecutando un neo prog con marcadas influencias a lo Genésis - voces incluídas - Rael incorpora ritmos folclóricos a su música dandole un toque muy personal a sus canciones. Arreglos muy bien hechos y una ejecución muy prolija hacen de este un muy buen album incoseguible por estos días. Para tener en cuenta.

Fusion an classic mixed with a very worked prog is the disctintion of AKG. The sound quality is one of the basic issues for live albums and here we hear each instrument distinctly, every complicated pattern. The music is dynamic, intrincated, sometimes the violin takes initiative from the guitar, sax and percussion, that makes the music exquisite and original, may be - in fact surely - influences of master Fripp are present. Something surely different to what I was used to listen. More than recommended.

Fusión y clásico mezclado con un muy elaborado progresivo is el distintivo de AKG. La calidad de sonido del básica en los discos en vivo y en esta grabación se aprecian bien los detalles de su compleja música. El estilo es dinámico, complejo, a veces el violín gana participación sobre el saxo y la guitarra y elementos percusivos que hacen una musica exquisita y original, tal vez - de hecho - la influencia del maestro Fripp está presente. Algo distinto a lo que estaba acostumbrado a escuchar. Mas que recomendado.

First solo outing by former frontman of Sebastian Hardie and Windchase. Primarily a guitarist and singer, Millo plays in a style that to my ears is reminiscent of both Steve Howe and Andy Latimer. He sings in the same range as John Wetton, although his voice is much smoother and less affected. The music on this record is a mixture of Symphonic Prog, lite Fusion, Pop songs and a ballad or two. In other words, it's not entirely a Prog record, but the other influences aren't unpleasant at all - he has a nice gift for hooks and all of the material is well-crafted and oozes professionalism. The standout number is the 14 minute title track Epic III, which shows a clear Yes influence, and is a tour-de-force of Prog Rock stylings, featuring excellent guitar work, plenty of 70's keyboards goodness, twisting rhythms and beautiful harmonies. This record won't blow anyone away, but it's a very worthwhile listening experience and a fine piece of work from one of Australia's top musicans.

No puede llamarse una reunión de la banda para esta presentación en vivo, ya que el único integrante de la formación ya cambiante de los 70 es Osvaldo Favrot, su guitarrista. Y si hay algo que Espíritu le debía a sus fans era un disco en vivo con un sonido decente ya que aquel Obras 82 sirve solo como documento. En Vivo 2004 tiene algunos temas nuevos de la banda de su último disco "Fronteras Mágicas" del 2003 y varios de sus mejores albumes "Crisálida" y "Libre y Natural". Quienes debieron ocupar el lugar de sus antecesores cumplen un papel digno, Pablo Guglielmino en voz no hace extrañar demasiado a Berge y Federico Favrot (hijo de Osvaldo) brinda una base firme con su bajo, aunque personalmente extraño ese sonido Squireano que le daba Claudio Martínez. En resumen, un buen disco de este renovado Espíritu donde sus puntos mas altos están en las versiones de sus mayores éxitos de los 70. El sonido del sinfónico de esa época se mantiene vigente. Para deleitarse.

It's hard to consider this album a reunion of the band, as the only original member is the guitarist Osvaldo Favrot. And if there was something missing for their fans was a decent sound live album, as their Obras 82 only worth as document. En Vivo 2004 has some new songs from their last album "Fronteras Mágicas" recorded in 2003 and several of the best songs of their main albums "Crisalida" and "Libre y Natural". Those who have to take the place of their predecessors make a good job, pablo Guglielmino in vocals makes Berge not to be missed and Federico Favrot (Osvaldo's son) gives a firm support with his bass, though I personally miss the Squirish sound of Claudio Martínez. Resuming, a good album of this renewed Espíritu where the high points are in their versions of their exits of the 70s. The symphonic sound of that era is still vigent. To enjoy.

Album grabado en París donde la banda había exiliado cuando sufría la persecución de las dictaduras militares de Chile primero y Argentina después. Las canciones resultan de la musicalización de poemas de Violeta Parra - poetisa Chilena de tormentosa vida - salvo el tema "Un río de sangre". En las letras se puede ver reflejado muy bien la ideología de Los Jaivas, alineados a Violeta Parra, y la música en particular de este disco es lo que me atrevería a llamar un folclore negro, donde puede apreciarse una cierta melancolía y bronca, tal vez por el exilio forzado al que estaban obligados. Se puede apreciar una gran calidad en los arreglos musicales, distante a los ritmos a los que venían tocando, y desde ya, una profundidad y crudeza de las letras que si bien fueron escritas hace décadas se mantienen vigentes en el tiempo.

Album recorded in Paris, where the band was exiliated when was first persecuted by the Chilenean dictatorship and afterwards by the Argentinean. The songs are poems of Violeta Parra - Chilenean poetress of tormentous life - except "Un río de sangre". In the lyrics it can be seen reflected that the ideology of Los Jaivas was aligned with Violeta Parra's, and the music in particular of this record is what I would dare to call a "black" folcklore, when you can appreciate a certain melancoly and anger, may be because of the forced exile they were suffering. A high quality in the nmusical arrangements, very distant to the rythms Los Jaivas used to play, and of course, a deep and raw lyrics wroten decades ago still vigent.

Fantastic 70s-inspired Symphonic Prog. Their sound is remarkably similar to their fellow countrymen Anglagard, although just a bit more low-key. The traditional line-up of guitars, keys, bass and drums is augmented by a flautist and cellist, which adds a bit of a chamber rock feel to some of the material. The keyboards are particularly strong, with extensive use of Hammonds, Mellotrons and other mainstays of the 70s. The vocals are in Swedish and are kept to a minimum, but are used effectively and definitely reinforce the Scandinavian vibe. A superb recording, with excellent compositions and stellar musicianship - highly recommended.

Mostly of the songs of this album were recorded in 1972, but this edition (1996) has a couple of tracks from 1973. You wil find here the very early beginnings of this band playing a local folcklor with lots of autocton instrumments, lots of percussion and flutes, ciqus, horn (but not brass!), charango, supported by a basis of acoustic piano, organ, bass and electric guitar. Some fusion ingredients present, long jams in the form of songs, a real document of that time.

La mayoría de los temas de este disco fueron grabados en 1972, pero esta edición (de 1996) tiene un par de temas grabados en 1973. Enontrarán aquí los primeros comienzo de Los Jaivas tocando un folklore andino lleno de instrumentos autóctonos, mucha percusión y flautas, quenas, ciqus, cuernos, charango soportados por una base rítmica de piano, órgano, bajo y guitarra eléctrica. Algunos toques de fusión incipiente que el tiempo le daría mas cabida, largas zapadas en forma de canciones. Un verdadero documento de la época.

Ave Rock was a band that has to be considered through the underground of the rock scene in Argentina. Though they were not very popular, their work is to be considered as materpieces. I get to found his second album in CD thanks to the reediting done by the Brazilian lable Progressive Rock Worldwide. Their music style is influenced by the premium british prog bands of that time, mainly symphonic with lots of keyboards. For this album the band changed 3 of their original members.

Ave Rock fué una banda que tal vez deba ser considerada dentro del circuito under del rock de su éspoca. Si bien distaron de ser populares su trabajo debe ser considerado como obras maestras. He encontrado su segundo album gracias a la reedición del sello Brasilero Progressive Rock que ha ayudado al reconocimiento internacional de la banda. Algo similar al fenómeno Bubú. Su estilo musical está influenciado por las grandes bandas inglesas de la época, con orientación sinfónica con bases en un gran trabajo de teclados. Bubú es una banda Argentina con mas reconocimiento en el exterior que en su propio país. Algo típico de nuestra idiosincracia. Si bien en el año en que salió editado el disco el movimiento progresivo a nivel mundial comenzaba a orientarse hacia un sonido mas "comercial", Anabelas estaba muy lejos de ir hacia esa tendencia. Una música de alta copmplejidad, impecablemente ejecutada, con arreglos desconocidos en el rock local (nunca superado) Bubú contó con un selecto grupo de músicos que hicieron con éste su único album ganarse el mote de "banda de culto". Tuve la suerte de ver presentaciones de ellos en vivo, y sumada a la altísima calidad técnica de su música el despliegue y producción escéncia estaba a la altura de las circunstancias. Tal vez en un país distinto Bubú hubiese llegado a niveles de difusión similares al de las principales bandas Inglesas. Un verdadero orgullo de que lleven el rótulo Argentino.

Bubú is an Argentinean band with more recognition abroad than in it´s own country. In the year this - their only album - came out, the progressive movement was deforming in a more "commercial" style, but Anabelas was far away from that tendency. A high complex music, neatly played, with unknown arrangements for the local rock (still up to day) Bubú counted with a select group of musicians that made of this piece of art a recognition of a "band of cult". I had the luck to see them on stage several times, and added to the premium quality of their music the production on stage was at the same level of quality. May be in a different country, Bubú surely would reached the levels of difussion and recognition similar to the main stream bands. Proudly Made in Argentina.

Not too much to tell about this one. It's an earlier incarnation of Japanese Prog stalwarts Bi Kyo Ran playing King Crimson covers from Larks and Starless. This is actually quite good. The performances are authentic without being exact, and the sound quality is pretty good, considering this was recorded under "bootleg" conditions. These guys actually play this material with more power and energy than some of the Crimson performances from back then, which could be "dainty" at times. A must for Crimsonheads, and a good record to have for any Prog fan.

Fantastic 17th release by this top Progressive Jazz-Rock group - maybe the best from Japan, and certainly the most popular. Led by guitarist and composer Yoshihisa Shimizu, their music is a spellbinding mixture of Jazz Rock and Symphonic Prog, with loads of exceptional guitar and keyboard work. Musicianship is amazing, and the songwriting and arrangements are of the highest caliber. They've been around in one form or another since 1980, and the line-ups and styles have shifted back and forth over the years, but in all cases they've made exceptional music. This release finds them just a touch heavier on the guitar and ethnic vibe than on some of their previous releases, and each of the 17 tracks has its own distinct style and flavor. If you've never heard these guys, you're in for a real treat. If you do know them, you won't be disappointed. Without a doubt one of the best Progressive groups of the last (almost) 30 years. Essential.

Mr. Bruford - considered by many to be the consummate Progressive Rock drummer - recounts stories about his days with King Crimson, the formation of his own band - Bruford, how the group UK came to be, and his more Jazz-oriented career of the past several years. Interspersed with the interview, are some excellent musical snippets from his mid-to-later career, along with his musings on today's music and the recording industry of both yesterday and today. Should be of real interest to fans of this groundbreaking and unique musician.

I must confess that albums like this are very hard to review. On one hand, they have a sound that is quite familiar to Progressive fans. On the other hand, they defy comparison, because they really don't sound like any other band. Such is the case with Arachnoid. You'll hear moments of English groups like Genesis and King Crimson, along with other theatrical French Progressive bands like Ange and Mona Lisa, but to compare them to any of these other groups would be a disservice. I'll just say that lovers of Symphonic Prog should like this band quite a bit, particualrly if you like something a bit on the darker side. Like Ange, they use tricked-out organ waves combining with Mellotron to create these otherworldly backdrops for complex guitar, piano, bass and drum excursions. And the vocals are definitely of the French dramatic school, filled with characterizations and plenty of spoken word passages. So, while this is what some might term a somber or dark recording, it is in no way lethargic or low-key - in fact, for the most part, it rocks along at a lively pace - albeit a sometimes sinister one. Really, really good stuff.

With some simetries with the band Iconoclasta, Delirium makes a progressive rock where counterpoints between guitar and keybords are present. The violin participates in three tracks by the hand of the guest musician Alfredo Flores. A nice debut for this band that mantains the flavour of the good Mexican prog music.

Nikki Squire took the name from a deformation of his husband Chris's surname. Though it does not appear in the credits, it is said that Chris has a participation in this album. Nikki is supported here by multiinstrumentist Nigel McLaren, making a vocal based album where she demonstrates the huge variation of tones her voice can give. You may have heard a couple of tracks in the album "Yes Friends & Relatives". A nice easy listening neat album, very carefully produced.

OK, some neo prog here played by one of those bands that takes all the spirit of the 70's refreshed with the flavours of the neo scene. Paradise Square is the second an last album of SS, and you will find here a Genesis basis developed in the characteristical sound of bands like Pendragon (mainly), IQ and Marillion. Nice neat work by this swedish band.

Bueno, un poco de neo prog tocado por una de esas bandas que toman el espíritu de los 70 refrescado con los tonos del sonido neo. Though thier sound has the fresh ingredients of the neo prog scene, Tempus Fugit takes from the 70's their particular sound, neat, strong, very symphonic, some reminicenses of Yes, Camel, PFM, Genesis with - of course - touches of Brazilian rythms that makes an astonishing combination of styles. These guys make a symphonic rock in a perfect combination with local sounds and rythms. Check out the result. And please tell us what do you think about it.

Sobresaliente banda Brasilera. Si bien su sonido tiene los ingredientes del neo prog actual, Tempus Fugit toma de los 70 su sonido particular, prolijo, firme, muy sinfónico, con algunas reminiscencias de Yes, Camel, PFM, Genesis con - por supuesto - toques de ritmos Brasileros que dan como resultado una sorprendente combinación de estilos. Banda Española de los años 70 orientados a la música prog fusión con marcadas influencias a Return To Forever, en este disco de temas totalmente instrumentales. Las bases giran en torno a ritmos flamencos con solos repartidos en continuos duelos entre la guitarra y el piano / sintetizadores que hacen recordar los contrapuntos entre Chick Corea y Al DiMeola. Música de gran nivel, para recomendar.

Spanish band from the 70's oriented to a prog-fusion style with marked influences of Return To Forever, in this album with 100% instrumental songs. The base rithms are definetely flamenco styled with shared solos between the guitar and Keyboards which make you remind of the duels between Chick Corea and Al DiMeola. High level music, recommended.

One-and-only offering from this quartet featuring two members of well-known Aussie Prog band Sebastian Hardie. Stylistically very similar to SH, featuring excellent guitar work and lush keyboards. Closest comparison to my ears would be mid-70's Camel, although there are some slight hints at Fusion here and there. Mostly instrumental, the few vocals - sung by guitarist Mario Millo - are quite pleasant. He has a rich baritone, and sings in manner that would be well-suited for several genres. He's quite the guitarist as well, playing in style similar to some of Steve Howe's solo work. Standout track is the nearly seven-minute "No Scruples" written by keyboardist Toivo Pilt, which features blaring Hammond organ and ferocious Mellotron Choir. This song is pretty different from the rest, in that it shows a very distinct Yes influence, both instrumentally and vocally - seemingly their attempt to have a "hit" along the lines of "Roundabout". The CD reissue includes a bonus Live track performed by Mario Millo's solo group in the late '90s. Nice record.

Allen's brothers came from USA with a Flamenco background due their dancer mother and guitar player father of that style. Roberto Amaral from Spain gave the voices and percussion remarking the although Flamenco tendency of the band.

Another late 70's gem from Spain - and this is one of the best. This group plays an immaculate Symphonic Prog, with a certain amount of influence from Gabriel-era Genesis. This shows up mostly in the keyboard and guitar work. The keyboards (piano, synths and gorgeous Mellotron) are played in a very Romantic style typical of Tony Banks, and the lead guitarist uses a lot of sustain and volume pedal which will bring to mind Steve Hackett's style of that period. There's also some nice flute played in a classical/jazzy fashion reminiscent of PFM, and some beautiful uncredited Female vocals, which add a nice delicate flavor to several of the tracks . But their style - though familiar - is definitely their own and all of these elements are wrapped up in a distinctly Spanish package. This record is a sterling example of the best Symphonic Prog - great musicianship, excellent composition and arrangements. and a generous respect for their influences. This record delivers on every level and merits my highest recommendation - essential.

Another treasure from Quebec. This quintet plays a magical mixture of Symphonic Prog and Jazz Rock that truly is a unique blend of the two genres. There's no one song that could fit into either category by itself - instead each of Sloche's compositions incorporate influences as diverse as say for instance, Return to Forever/Mahavishnu and Camel/Yes. Led by two keyboardist - one who plays electric and acoustic piano in a style reminiscent of early Jan Hammer, while the other guy handles the organ, synths and clavs in the style of Kerry Minear from Gentle Giant. He also contributes some nice sax on a few tunes. That said, all the players are superb, and regardless of your favorite instruments, you'll be impressed. Like their quebecois compatriots Maneige, they have a taste for some funky stuff as well. The vocals may remind one of Yes - not the high pitch of the voice, but in the way they use harmony, although this album in predominantly instrumental. I'm a sucker for both the complex and highly melodic, and this group delivers on both counts. A remarkable record and a must-have.

Second and last album of this French neoprog band with many condimments of the 70's. If though they have a more personal style in this album than the first, some Yes like tunes are still present in their music, and the vocals have a Jon Anderson influence but in a lower tone. The songs are shared between purely instrumental and vocal pieces. Some ethnic sounds are also present as can be detected in the track "Taj Mahal" which closes a very nice work by this band.

Segundo y último album de esta banda Francesa neoprogresiva con condimentos en su música de los años 70. Si bien se detecta un estilo mucho mas personal en este album que en el primero, algunos pasajes a lo Yes aún están presentes en su música, y el cantante tiene una voz imitando a Jon Anderson pero en un tono mas bajo. Los temas están compartidos entre instrumentales y cantados. Algunas reminiscencias étnicas aparecen a lo largo de su música, especialmente en el tema "Taj Mahal" cerrando un muy buen trabajo de esta banda.

Banda formada en el año 1967 dedicada en sus inicios a la psicodelia. Liderada por su guitarrista Roger Chapman, la banda sufrió muchos cambios en su formación y en su música. Hacia inicios de 1970 se orientó hacia un hard rock mas de la época. La inclusión de John Wetton en 1971 se mantuvo para 2 albumes "Fearless" y el posteado hoy aquí "Bandstand". En 1973 tras la grabación de "It's only a movie" la banda pone fin a su trayectoria. Lejos de encontrar un estilo Wettoniano en este album, la música de Family está orientada hacia canciones con acento en el hard prog de los inicios. Nada muy experimental, pero sin duda registro de una época.

Far away from finding a Wettonish style in this album, Family's music is oriented to songs sustained in the hard prog of the beginnings. Nothing very experimental, but no doubt a record of that time.

Charming Chamber Folk from this instrumental ensemble. Led by Composer/classical guitarist Guillermo Diego and percussionist Norma Chargoy, this recording leads us on a cultural anthropological tour of Mexico. Mixing Western Classical music with Prehispanic themes and Spanish-influenced folk, both modern and ancient instruments are blended in each composition, creating a very unique and enjoyable listening experience. Heavy on woodwinds, strings and the aforementioned classical guitars and percussion, overall the music is pretty lively despite the absence of electrical instruments, and often reminds me of the orchestral themes in Camel's The Snow Goose, albeit with a very Mexican flavor. Beautiful stuff - highly recommended.

Their music varies in many rhythms being mostly instrumental. Resuming, a big mixture of styles giving a neat result.

First and only album of this band with Lark's Crimson era influence (to the point of plagium) in some tracks, but with their own style in others. Artcane has not been very much difussed then by the Phillips lable who edited their album but left a hidden jewel now to be discovered. The guitar is 100% Fripp style, very well performed by Jack Mlynski. I get this rip from a vinyl with very good sound quality. I believe this has not been edited in CD.

Remarkable first release by this Chamber/Folk Prog ensemble. As with their later work, their sound is primarily acoustic, although these guys play with the fire and prowess of the best fusion groups. Violins, mandolins and acoustic guitars form the nucleus of the group, but it's the lead electric guitar and bass that really define their originality. The guitarist's Fripp-like leads are a particular delight, often appearing out of nowhere - it's as if there were some seething undercurrent to the music, just lying in wait for the opportunity to propel the song into the next dimension. And the bassist does a masterful job of being the entire rhythm section. His playing kinda reminds me of Ray Shulman from Gentle Giant. Thick, chunky bass lines that are both the engine and the heartbeat of each composition. The vocals are intense and theatrical in a style typical of the French-speaking bands of the period. Heady stuff that requires active listening, but the payoff is tremendous.

Simply put, this may be one of the best Prog Folk records of all time. Malicorne started out as a predominately acoustic group and gradually added elements of Rock and Progressive music culminating in this masterpiece. Le Bestiaire is a concept album based on the French folklore theme of "shapeshifting" or the transformation back and forth between humans and animals. Classical and Celtic/Medieval folk instruments combine with traditional Rock instrumentation to create a unique and intoxicating music. Stringed instruments - violins, hurdy gurdys, mandocellos, and woodwinds - recorders, bassoon, bagpipes are cleverly supported by synths, clavs, electric guitars, bass and drums. The dark subject matter lends an air of melancholy to much of the album, but this isn't a dreary record - many of the pieces bring to mind traditional Breton dance music, and they're never afraid to rock out when appropriate. The then husband and wife team of Gabriel and Marie Yacoub share the majority of the vocal duties, and there are some great acapella sections with harmonies that will blow your mind. An astounding record and must have for any Prog collection. Of note: Brian Gulland of the English group Gryphon plays a significant role on this recording, and fans of that band will immediately recognize his signature bassoon work.

Tal vez no se encuentren con sonidos o conceptos musicales novedosos, pero estos muchachos hacen un gran trabajo que es difícil (como dice su nombre) creer que se trata de un trío. Un album sin desperdicios.

Spanish Tryo with strong Crimsonic influences, to the point that have recorded albums with covers of King Crimson's songs. This album in special has a marked style to the last 80's Crimson, mainly based in an Adrian Belew-influence. May be you won't find new sounds or unknown musical concepts, but these guys make a very difficult (as their name says) work that makes you doubt they are only three. An album with no waste.

Spektakel is one of those unknown bands which has enjoyed a resurgence long after its dissolution. The band lived as a community in a Castle in Germany in a continuous rehearsal environment. Their music was characterized by the jams, and their shows could last up to 5 hours. Three long tracks and a bonus live track demonstrate their fondness for jamming. Very much like Red-era King Crimson, although they have their own particular sound. A pearl to be appreciated.

Los Jaivas was a Chilean band formed in the early 70's with a strong influence of the folk music of the Andean region (Los Andes mountains). Strong compositions and wonderful arrangements with a folkloric essence is found in their songs. Playing typical instruments of the region - wonderfully - this band that lived as a hippie community was forced to leave Chile during the dictatorship of Pinochet. They came to a weak democratic Argentina, and when our Dictators took the country they went to France in exile. A jewel to be taken into account.

Los Javias de Chile fué una banda formada en los principios de los 70 con una fuerte influencia de la música Andina. Composiciones muy cuidadas y hermosos arreglos con base en el folclore son la escencia de su música. Tocando instrumentos autóctonos de la región - magnificamente ejecutados - esta bada que vivía en forma de comunidad hippie fué forzada a abandonar Chile durante la incipiente dictadura de Pinochet. Se mudaron a una Argentina con democracia débil y cuando nuestros Dictadores tomaron el poder exiliaron a Francia. Una pequeña joya para ser tenida en cuenta.

Debut album from this superb Swiss quartet. Many listeners will be familiar with Circus's 2nd recording, Movin' On - a near masterpiece. This record is only slightly less so, and fans of that album and newcomers alike will not be disappointed. As with many Swiss groups, Circus's music was primarily influenced by 70's UK Prog - in this case, early Genesis and perhaps even more so Van Der Graaf Generator. Their sound was unique for a Symphonic band in that there were no keyboards used. Don't worry - you won't miss them. In their place, woodwinds, vibes and guitars form the melodic and harmonic nucleus of the group, along with lively, sure-handed drumming and vocals that can only be described as Hammill-esque. Lots of nice interplay between flutes and saxophones not only reinforces the VDGG aspect to their music, but also provides a nice jazzy feel to the extended instrumental passages. An excellent effort from a country sometimes overlooked in terms of great Progressive music. To be discovered.

Pär Lindh is a remarkable keyboardist very à la Emerson. In this, his 5th record, a turn to a Wakeman's style is very well detected, but not leaving his already Emerson influences. So, imagine Keith meeting Rick and then you can figure out what to find in this album. A magnificient job at the keyboards where sometimes a self style arises, mainly when female voices are present. Seems to add some Swedish folk style to the avalanche of music. Very much orchestrated VVV is an astonishing release of this wonderful musician.

Pär Lindh es un destacadísimo tecladista muy influenciado por Emerson. En este, su 5ª album, un giro hacia un estilo Wakeman es bien apreciable, pero no abandonando su marcada influencia de Emerson. Así que imagínense a Keith encontrándose con Rick y encuentren el resultado en este album. Raul Porchetto, a songwriter who mantained his idealism at the point of almost losing his artistic career several times, made Cristo Rock - his first work - a concept album with strong lyrics against the church. Maybe one has to travel in time to the Argentina of those years, where the political situation was not stable and the church supported the dictatorial goverments and their atrocities. This album cost Raul Porchetto 2 years of forced silence from the record companies. What will you find here? Well, the strength is in the lyrics in the very first place. Enclosed in the rip you will find the letters of the 8 songs (+ 4 bonuses) both in spanish and english (sorry french speakers) to check out the critisicm put on them. The story talks about Jesus coming to earth at present. The music is in part acoustic (Raul's musical origin) with an impressive supporting band of musicians amongst whom were Charly García, a newcomer on keyboards and who in the future formed Sui Generis, La Maquina de Hacer Pajaros and Seru Giran all bands of the main rock circuit of Argentina.

Primer trabajo discográfico de Raul Porcheto. Un disco conceptual cuyo eje principal es la crítica hacia la iglesia basada en la llegada de Jesus a la tierra en el presente. Este disco le valió a Raul 2 años de no poder grabar un nuevo disco, en una época donde la Iglesia daba apoyo a los atroces gobiernos dictatoriales de aquellos años. Se adjuntan las letras de las canciones para que puedan apreciar la fuerza crítica de las mismas. La música es en parte acústica (como los orígenes de Raul) y en otras con una impresionante banda de músicos de soporte entre los que se encontraba el debutante Charly García en teclados quien posteriormente fuera lider de bandas como Sui Generis, La Maquina de Hacer Pajaros y Seru Giran.

Symphonic Prog from a band formed in the late 70's, who recently regrouped and recorded this fine album. Their style is very typical of Latin American Prog, meaning that there seems to be an equal influence from both the British and Italian masters. Keyboards are provided by Roberto Santamaria, best known for his work with the wonderful Spanish group Amarok, although his style on this record is a bit different, being very reminiscent of Keith Emerson. The guitarist doesn't take a back seat however, and the arrangements are such that each player is given an equal chance to contribute. The rhythm section is slightly oriented towards Fusion due to the use of Fretless bass and the drummer's fondness for intricate fills and jazzy flourishes. Strong Spanish vocals are present on a few songs, with both Male and Female singers having an expressive and lyrical style. All-in-all this is great Prog and an excellent debut - here's hoping to their continued success. Of note: the cover is not clipped or askew - that's the way it's designed.

Very cool retro Prog Pop trio. Evidently, this is a side-project of Italian Progsters Standarte - a band I'm not familiar with, but who are supposedly like Atomic Rooster. I'd say that AR was an influence on this group as well, but you can also hear some Beatles, Pink Floyd and maybe even some Kinks circa Village Green. Heavy organ dominates the instrumentation, while the vocals bring to mind British Psychedelic Pop of the late 60's/early 70's. Guitars are used sparingly, but Clavinets, Moogs and Mellotron are quite present and the sound is very full and rich. The bass player has the McCartney thing down, and the drummer has a nice almost Mitch Mitchell-type style. He also handles the vocal duties, but his accent is very slight compared to most Italian bands singing in English, and not a distraction at all. Having plenty of great hooks helps as well, and several of these songs wouldn't have been out of place on AM radio back in the day. So, all of this been done many times before, but not every band blends their influences so well and has such a strong sense of melody. Highly enjoyable.

From his initial days in the explosive London music scene of the late 60's, through his time with rock innovators King Crimson, and as member of the already mytical band, Emerson, Lake and Palmer; Greg Lake has continually made records that have left a mark in music. Today, nearly four decades after he was first introduced, he remains committed to creating vital and contemporary music. This sort of compilation album has songs of the differents eras of Greg so as some rarities too. Hope you enjoy!

Band from the neo-prog scene with heavy influences of the 70's prog. The music - may be a heavier Asgard (the Italian Symphonic band, not the Metal guys) - is supported by a deep atmosphere of keyboards and adjusted guitar solos. The singer Alessandro Lamiraglia has a characteristic voice, maybe Gabriel-oriented, but his timber is quite original. Long instrumental passages with many changes of rhythms and melodies. Unfortunately this is the only album of the band.

Su música - tal vez un Asgard mas pesado (el grupo de rock sinfónico italiano, no los chicos del Metal) está basada en densas atmósferas de teclados con brillantes entradas de guitarra. Excellent 2nd release by this Alemannic-Swiss Symphonic group. Many people are familiar with their wonderful 1st record Calatea, but this superb follow-up doesn't seem to get the same attention. That's a shame because this album is every bit its equal. Having lost their guitarist, the band is now reduced to a four-piece of vocals/woodwinds, keyboards, bass and drums. Their sound is truly a hodge-podge of several great 70's acts. The keyboardist brings to mind early Genesis, and Tony Banks references abound. He also plays a lot of acoustic piano in a very elaborate style, and you get the feeling he knows both his Emerson and Rachmaninoff backwards and forwards. Vocalist Peter Wolf (not Mr. Dunaway) sings in English, but he has a pretty good voice and the accent is tolerable. He also plays an array of saxophones and flutes, giving many of the instrumental bits a Van Der Graaf Generator feel. The drums and bass are more from the Yes school - meaning intricate, propulsive and way up in the mix. While their influences are quite apparent, they have such strong original material and the execution is so perfect that it never sounds forced or derivative. Each of the four long tracks takes several twists and turns, and no passage is ever around long enough to become boring or stale. This is one of those bands you wonder how you missed them the first time around. Great stuff. Of note: I don't know their later albums, but it's said that they're pretty lame in comparison to the first two. Also, there's a one-minute bonus track 5 that's not listed in the credits, so I've no idea of its title.

Banda formada en la por entonces todavía unida Yugoslavia, Tako sugiere una música en donde se pueden encontrar ciertas influencias de Pink Floyd (en el inicio del primer tema se aprecia la introducción del album Wish you Were Here) con una mezcla de Camel. Pero a medida que se recorre el album, se detecta una orientación hacia el jazz-fusión que es mantienido por un fondo de teclados (mucho mellotrón) con un estilo bastante particular.

Band formed in the former Yugoslavia, Tako suggests a music in where you can find some influences of Pink Floyd (the beginning of the first track you appreciate the introduction of Wish you Were Here album) with a mixture with Camel. But, as long as you get into the album, a jazz-fusion orientation is detected, sustained by keyboards (mainly Mellotron) with a very self made style.

70's-inspired Symphonic Prog. Their sound reminds me somewhat of the 70's American group Cathedral, in the way that they seem to be inspired by equal parts Yes and Genesis. With Ad Infinitum you can throw in a little bit of ELP as well. So, not very original, but then obviously it's not intended to be. There's a Roger Dean cover, most songs are about 10 minutes long, there are song names like "All Hallows Eve" and the lyrics - well, we just won't mention those. On the other hand, this really is a nice sounding record. Lots of 90's productions have a sterile, over-processed feel to them (especially on the drums), but this recording avoids much of that. Hats off to the engineer. Hats back on for the singer, who unfortunately has the type of voice that's an acquired taste - one that I haven't acquired yet. He has one of these annoying super-vibratos that's more appropriate for bands like Styx or Kansas. In a nutshell: music - Prog, vocals - AOR. Of course, this is my very subjective opinion, and the issues I have with this record won't bother a lot of people.

Court is one of those new Italian bands which brings with it the italian prog of the 70's. Their music is directly influenced by Finisterre, and whoever talks about Finisterre is mentioning PFM. Lyrics are in English with that typical italian accent.

Released some 4 years after their first record, this second studio effort finds the group venturing into more accessible territory while remaining true to their Progressive roots. A new female vocalist is added, guitars play a more prominent role and the songs are shorter in general, with several clocking in at under 4 minutes. None of this proves to be a bad thing at all and fans of Progressive music shouldn't be disappointed. Although I dearly love Sudden Dusk, sometimes it seemed more like a project due to the numerous guest musicians and the abundance of instruments used. Calling on the other hand sounds more like the product of a real band. There's a new level of maturity to the compositions and the arrangements are definitely tighter. Now instead of sounding like a Gentle Giant or Canterbury-influenced band, they sound like the type of band you'd like, if you like that type of sound - if that makes sense. A worthy addition to your collection.

As the name suggests, one would expect this band to be related to Yes' style. Well, I must say a part of it is true. 100% instrumental, the bass sounds like Chris's Rickenbacker, and some tunes may remind you Yes and perhaps some Steve Hackett - but only in the first half of the CD. The second part begins to turn more to a fusion style while mantaining the musical trend of the first. That is, it seems like that in the second half these guys are defining their own style which is for sure very interesting.

Ünder Linden es una banda originaria de La Plata (Capital de Buenos Aires) nacida en 2002 con es miembros de la legendaria banda Farenheit. Su nombre viene de una avenida principal de Berlin (Ünder Der Linden) que significa "bajo los tilos", precisamente los árboles de la ciudad de La Plata son retoños de aquellos tilos. Su música de prog sinfónico está centrada en una base de teclados, batería y bajo que hacen de soporte a la guitarra y el violín que juegan un papel de solistas virtuosos. La base rítmica es sólida y variada, con momentos de calma y placidez hasta una vorágine de música aplastante que está muy bien ajustada.

I bet you've never heard of these guys. Of course they're from the underground circuit, and this CD (bootleg) shows the energy of the band Live with excellent sound. Ünder Linden was formed in La Plata (Capital of Buenos Aires) in 2002 with former members of the legendary band Farenheit. Their name comes from a main avenue in Berlin which is lined with trees. Their Symphonic-Prog Rock is centered around keyboards, drums and bass supporting the guitar and violin which take the lead roles. The rhythm section is solid and varied, with moments of calmness and placidity combined with an accomplished harder-edged Rock sound.

Here's a nice one for all of you Mahavishnu Orchestra fans and Fusion lovers in general. This incredible tribute band takes on the monumental task of recreating on-stage one of my all-time favorite Fusion records - 1975's Visions of the Emerald Beyond. With little or no Live material on which to base their performances, The Mahavishnu Project takes the approach of attempting to capture the essence of what the original songs might have sounded like in concert, rather than a note-by-note recreation of the original album. For the most part, they do a fantastic job. These guys are all exceptional players, and you'll be amazed at how they they manage to keep these ultra-complex compositions sounding fresh and exciting some 32 years after the fact. Guitarist Glenn Alexander and drummer Greg Bendian are particular stand-outs, and there are several moments when you'd swear you were listening to the original group. There are some notable differences - keyboards replace the rhythm guitars in several places, and woodwinds handle melodies here and there that were performed on violin on the original album (which is a bit strange as this group includes 5 string players). Another exception is the vocals. I'm afraid that in my opinion vocalist Maria Neckham doesn't quite cut it. She's on pitch and everything, but for some reason she sounds distant and disinterested. Still, it's a small complaint and has little or no effect on the success of the record, as the vocals are few and far between. This is a wonderful presentation of what might have been, and has the "official" approval of Mr. McLaughlin himself. One helluva listening experience - grab it.

This is my favorite Canterbury band that's not actually from Canterbury. Admittedly, I'm a bit biased. They hail from Athens, GA, a small college town not far from where I live that's known for its great music scene. REM, The B-52's and Widespread Panic are just a few of the Athens groups to gain national and international attention. Volaré's music is absolutely fantastic stuff - if you didn't know better, you'd swear this album was some long-lost Hatfield or National Health recording. These are groups that I hold in the highest esteem, so I don't make these comparisons frivolously. Volaré's originality lies in the way that they blend elements of Symphonic Prog into their music - something a band like say, Gilgamesh would shy away from. Volaré makes no attempt to hide their Symphonic influences. In addition to the obligatory electric piano, thick Hammond chords and Mellotron choirs show up from time-to-time, as well as synth and acoustic piano parts that may bring to mind Happy The Man or even Genesis. The Uncertainty Principle is a record of tremendous depth, to be thoroughly explored and ultimately cherished. The musicianship is impeccable and the sound quality is beyond reproach. My highest recommendation.

Second release from this Chamber/Folk Prog group - perhaps the most accomplished musicians out of all the 70's Québecois Progsters. Conventum combined several musical elements into one decidedly French-Canadian experience. This record can evoke either the solitude of the cold, dark North, or the playful atmosphere of Québec City during Carnival at any given time. Predominantly instrumental, these guys aren't' the types to stick with any one particular style for very long. The traditional and modern join hands at every opportunity - a Breton reel gives way to a Zeuhl-fueled guitar meltdown, a jaunty Cabaret ditty sets the stage for an intense RIO-inspired diatribe against modern society. Deceptively acoustic sounding at first listen, violin and acoustic guitar often take the spotlight, but this is definitely a Rock band. Thick, punchy electric bass lines provide a solid rhythmic foundation, while chaotic electric guitar excursions often push the band towards the experimental. Flute, mandolin, 12-string, Upright bass and percussion are all occasionally employed to great effect. Terrific.

Second work of this Neo-progressive band with a style oriented to the 70's. On this album, ex-Nexus Mariela Gonzalez is replaced by Zeta on vocals. In their music you may detect the influences of Genesis and maybe Marillion. A good record with a qualified set of musicians.

I've read there are a few new members here, including a new vocalist. A great recent album from After Crying. After the fantastic four opening tracks, the band moves in more experimental directions at times, but the melodies stay strong, although less in the foreground. The playing is impeccable. The music is a cohesive combination of ELP plus Crimson Progressive Rock. A recommendable album and certainly worth anyone's attention.

Mezcla de ritmos con acompañamiento de percusión, flauta y voces hacen de este un album para ser tenido en cuenta.
Argentinean stickist with a wide musical range. Guillermo Cides worked over 10 years with the stick, developing a technique which resulted in this great album, where influences of Levin's Crimson-era are evident. Mixes of rhythms with percussion, flutes and voices make this an album to be taken into account.

Exciting new instrumental quartet, proving once again that Symphonic Prog - although approaching its 40th birthday - is still a viable and vibrant form of musical expression for young players. Taking cues from both Lark's-era Crimson and Anglagard, guitars and keyboards play equally prominent roles in such a way that you could take out either player and this music would still sound rich and complete. Together they form an amazing wall of sound - dark and intense but never dreary or heavy. The rhythm section absolutely smokes - the drumming is complex and powerful, and the bass is rock-solid and melodic, sitting perfectly in the mix. This record has only recently come to my attention, and I'm still in the process of taking it all in, but so far I have to say this is one of the best things I've heard this year. An excellent debut and a must-have.

Fantastic Live recording of this legendary band, captured at their peak. Great sound, great performances, people clapping - you name it, this one delivers. Material ranges from their excellent debut album through the ill-conceived Banco, which as I'm sure you know is primarily an English-language rehashing of earlier material. Which bring us to the good and bad of this recording - I'll start with the bad: "R.I.P." - a masterpiece when sung in Italian, is rendered pretty lame here in comparison, due to the awkward lyrics and heavily-accented English vocals of Francesco Di Giacomo. The music doesn't suffer, but you have to regret those distracting vocals, 99% of which are unintelligible. Now the good: everything else is sung in Italian! And, the one bright spot from the aforementioned Banco record - "L'Albero Del Pane", kicks major ass here, as does the rest of the material. I defy you to listen to this record and sit still. A major discovery, you really have to wonder how a recording of this caliber sat in the vaults for such a long time. You're unlikely to hear a better Live album by a Prog band, or any band for that matter. Simply incredible.

By the time Raindance came along, Gryphon had pretty much completed the transition from a Renaissance-influenced (the period not the band) acoustic group, to a straight-up, unabashed Symphonic Progressive Rock group. There's still plenty of recorder, bassoon and period percussion from the older sound, but for the most part this is an electric album and an excellent one at that. There are some similarities to Yes, most notably in the Howe-like guitars of Graeme Taylor and Richard Harvey's keyboard work, which often brings to mind Rick Wakeman. Not surprising really, as Gryphon supported Yes on much of the Relayer tour. Not to say this is a Yes ripoff, just a reference point. Stand-out tracks include the 16-minute opus "Ein Klein Heldenleben" and a beautiful rendition of "Mother Nature's Son". Normally, I consider it sacrilege to cover a Beatles tune, but this one is excellent - captures the essence of the original while venturing into new territory. Highly recommended.

Let me introduce you to the first 2 CDs of this Box Set collection of 22 CDs, both from 1974. The first one a studio album and the second one Live. This band formed in 1971, had its first record out in 1974. SBB has a Jazzy/Fusion-oriented style, though many Rock tunes are present in their music. Some King Crimson's Lark's Tongues in Aspic influences can be detected, but in a very personal style. What I can certainly assure is that these guys loved jamming. Mostly instrumental, both albums give an astonishing view of their music. You won't regret having these.

It was really starting to bother me that here we've started a Prog Blog, and have yet to post any Italian Prog. But so much of it is available at other blogs, it's a bit tough to offer something everybody hasn't heard already. So, here's something that just maybe you've missed out on along the way. LDF's Forse le lucciole non si amano più is pretty much legendary, and included in plenty of folks' top ten Italian Prog albums of all time (certainly mine). This is a live recording of that album + an unreleased track, taken from Italian Radio back in '77. For those that know that record, I need only tell you that this is a damn-near-perfect performance of those songs, albeit a bit ballsier. I must add that while the sound quality is not superlative, it is very, very good for a radio broadcast, and you'll be amazed at how well the band executes the often complex material. Their command of dynamics is superb, and the arrangements are spot on. For those that don't know them, just imagine Banco crossed with Genesis while both were at their peak - seriously, LDF is that good. Stunning and transcendent Progressive music. Highly recommended.
